While the Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild will meet for the first time this post-season, the Hawks and North Stars used to have a great rivalry in the 80′s and early 90′s.
The NHL re-aligns their divisions which results in the Minnesota North Stars being moved from the Adams Division to the Norris Division and the Chicago Blackhawks being moved from the Smythe to the Norris. The Norris Division Rivalry is born…
1982 NORRIS DIVISION SEMI-FINALS
The 4th place Chicago Blackhawks upset 1st place Minnesota, who had finished 22 points ahead of them in the standings, three games to one in a Best of Five.
- Game One : Minnesota Head Coach Glen Sonmor calls Al Secord an idiot and states that, “In the playoffs we won’t go after Secord, we’ll go right up to Savard and wring his neck.”

In the first period, Dave Hutchison of the Hawks butt-ends Dino Ciccarelli in the face giving him four stitches. The first period is penalty filled resulting in 125 penalty minutes doled out.
- Game Three: The North Stars thump the Blackhawks 7-1 including a hat trick from Dino Ciccarelli. A fight breaks out in the Chicago Stadium crowd that halts play. Denis Savard gets a misconduct for shoving a linesman during the game.
February 12, 1983 – It’s reported that Jack O’Callahan bit Ron Friest on the nose during a fight. Friest wipes away the blood from his nose in the penalty box and they fight again later in the game.
March 21, 1983 – Bench Clearing Brawl! Denis Savard and Dino Ciccarelli get into a fight which results in the benches clearing.
1983 NORRIS DIVISION FINALS
Chicago finishes ahead of Minnesota by eight points in the division and both win their first round matchups leading to a showdown in the division finals. The Blackhawks defeated the North Stars for the second straight year, this time 4 games to 1 in a Best of Seven.
1984 NORRIS DIVISION SEMI-FINALS
Minnesota finishes 20 points ahead of Chicago for first in the division and gets their first series win over the Blackhawks 3 games to 2.
1985 NORRIS DIVISION FINALS
Chicago finishes 21 points ahead of Minnesota in the division but Minnesota upsets first place St. Louis in the division semi-finals leading to a fourth straight showdown. Chicago takes this one 4 games to 2 in a Best of Seven.
Feb 19, 1986 – Al Secord swings his stick at Dino Ciccarelli again.
December 29, 1989 – The teams get involved in a pre-game brawl capped off by Wayne Van Dorp and Shane Churla throwing wild punches. Churla and van Dorp were suspended 10 games and Basil McRae got five. The rough action carries over into the game.
1990 NORRIS DIVISION SEMI-FINALS
Chicago finishes 22 points ahead of Minnesota and defeats them 4 games to 3 in a Best of Seven.
1991 NORRIS DIVISION SEMI-FINALS
Minnesota finishes fourth in the division and 38 points behind the Presidents Trophy winning Blackhawks but stuns them in the first round by beating them in six games. Minnesota would go all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they lost to the Penguins.

December 31, 1991 – Mark Tinordi lays out Jeremy Roenick leading to a brawl.
