Everyone keeps asking us ‘what’s with the name Shnarped?’ so it’s time for an explanation. Shnarps is a rummy-like card game played by the vast majority of major and minor professional hockey teams. Recently we (@DustinSproat, @KyleHagel, and @KamilSikorski) released an app called Shnarped Hockey that takes fans behind the scenes by connecting them with their favourite pro hockey players. So recently the term is getting thrown around hockey communities and is causing a lot of confusion.
On road trips players get meal per-diems. While not a huge amount of coin, this per-diem is handed out at the start of a road trip as cash in denominations that are very convenient for playing cards. Most buses have big card tables at the back, and quickly shnarps games of 6 – 8 guys fires up around them, often with rookies being left seated on the floor or out of the game completely. The stakes aren’t really that high; it’s sort of like fantasy hockey in the sense that the pride of winning outweighs the value of the cash received.
As an engineering grad, I was pre-labeled one of the smarter guys on most teams. For this reason I would often stay removed from shnarps games (and crossword puzzles) to ensure at least a mild preservation of said reputation. Shnarps is a game where experience, shiftiness, and sobriety outweigh educational qualifications. This is to say that I went hungry many road-trips.
As for the particular verbiage ‘Shnarped’ , we don’t really know what it means. You don’t actually say the words ‘I shnarped you!’ in the game itself. The word has neither positive nor negative connotations. We like it as the name of our app because it’s kind of a cool word, it can be used as a verb, and it’s an insider term that is immediately recognized by pro hockey players.
‘Shnarps is more than just a game, it has a life of its own. No other game can create more alliances that last less than a minute, or more enemies that last a lifetime. I remember just as many Spades calls from some [expletive] rookie that wants to go to bed at 5 am as I do overtime wins and battles on the ice. How else can you put a positive spin on a 10 hour bus ride through the night after being shut out by the worst team in the league? Shnarps was always there. Unless of course some rookie puke forgets to bring the cards.’
Our app - Shnarped Hockey - helps fans connect with their favourite hockey players and is not actually a card game. Send guys a ‘pound’ to acknowledge you like something they’ve done on the ice, and if the player is verified on our app (which many are), you just might hear back from them.
That shnarps card game would make a pretty sweet app too though…
